Let me start off by admitting that I’m not an avid thrifter like my dear friend and LA-travel buddy, Angelique, is. In fact, if it wasn’t for her I probably would’ve never ventured out to the Melrose Trading Post at all. Prior to her insistence that we visit, it wasn’t even on my radar but, boy am I glad she did drag me out because I was introduced to a whole new world of young entrepreneurship, inspiring up-and-coming artists, and just the thrill of a damn good find.
The Trading Post started out as a way for Fairfax High School to raise funds and has since proven to be the little market that could. It’s blown up into a successful weekly event for the adventurous, drawing locals and tourists alike to the school parking lot in. Today, the expansive vintage/indie market continues to help fund the community of Fairfax High School through admissions ($5) and vendor fees. Socially-conscious shopping? LOVE. Here, you can find everything and anything from art, to antiques, to collectibles, to clothing, to jewelry. Vintage, refurbished, handmade, artisan, you name it. Not to mention all the food and drink vendors plus live performers who participate every Sunday! It was so inspiring to see the positive impact of supporting local business. Some highlights from this Sunday Funday include:
1) Writings From Michael
"Founded By Artist, Michael G. Simpson. Writings From Michael is a one of one brand that speaks the poetic language of loving what you love to manifest. WFM are the scriptures to push the world forward one piece at a time. Taking you through struggle to triumph – these writings break down barriers within the culture, to move the culture. Each story is apart of the journey. The Writings From Michael Vintage Collection consist of hand selected refurbished materials. Each piece is hand painted and curated by artist Michael G. Simpson." - https://www.writingsfrommichael.com
We stumbled upon the sweetest Michael G. Simpson’s stall at the back of the market. It was his script that was loudly splashed all over canvases and sweatshirts and denim and t-shirts that caught my eye first and the message of his work that tugged at my heartstrings. Michael was quick to introduce himself and he had such an aura of positivity that I ended up lingering way longer so I could pick out the perfect piece to purchase. Finally, I gravitated towards this adorable tie-dye cropped sweatshirt with "Heal Nations" hand-painted across the front in Michael's signature script.

2) Paper Eight by Matthew Warren
“Stemming from his interests and background, PAPER 8 is dedicated to bringing you one of a kind art work and apparel from artist Matthew Warren. Born on the Island of Guernsey off the coast of France, Warren studied undergraduate Fine Art at The University of the West of England in Bristol before undertaking his Masters at OTIS College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA. His artistic perspective on America is unique, enhanced through living in the environment of his production, and his practice explores methods of representation stemming from American popular culture.Warrens work can be found in a number of public and private art collections both in the United States and abroad, and has been in numerous exhibitions worldwide." - https://www.paper8apparel.com
The moment I laid eyes on Miranda Priestly’s disapproving face on this pristine white sweatshirt, I knew I had to buy it. Pop culture vultures eat your heart out. Matthew’s stall is full of sweatshirts, tees, and print work depicting beloved Hollywood iconography. Ange ended up with a pink sweatshirt that of Damien from Mean Girls, hoodie pulled in tight around his face, “She doesn’t even go here.”
3) Upcycled Yeezus Jacket
I wish I had a cooler, more elaborate anecdote to accompany this dope deal but the two gentlemen who sold me the jacket neither had a business card nor any notable social media presence I could dig up. It was a purely transactional experience. Then again, having been out in the scorching sun for half a day might also’ve put a damper on my typically investigative mood. Never mind, just holding the jacket in my hand at the market people were already giving me compliments on the find. Thigh highs? YES. Wear it as a dress? YES. I love my oversized, especially during the fall/winter seasons ahead.
At the end of the day, not knowing what exactly you’ll encounter is part of the fun of attending the Trading Post. FYI, most vendors take card payments too so there’s really no excuse to miss out. The Melrose Trading Post is a full-day family-friendly affair for helluva good cause so get there as early as possible before all the parking is gone and tickets are done selling (cut off is at 4:45PM)!
